In Finland, Continuous Cover Forestry refers to a set of silvicultural practices that avoid large clearcuts and instead maintain a continuous canopy cover during harvesting. This is achieved through selection harvesting, gap cutting, and other unevenaged methods that leave viable trees standing while creating space for regeneration. The Finnish Forest Act allows forest owners the freedom to choose CCF methods, and in CCF operations a minimum basal area of living trees must be retained to ensure ongoing forest cover.

 

Natural regeneration is widely used for species like birch, where seedlings grow from seeds of trees left standing after selective harvesting. Leaving healthy seed treesand maintaining portions of the original forest encourages seedlings to sprout and establish naturally, preserving genetic diversity and reducing the need for intensive soil disturbance or planting.

 

This regeneration model means that forests are allowed to rejuvenate themselves in ways that mirror natural forest dynamics, rather than being reset through machineryintensive replanting. Natural regeneration, as supported by CCF and other unevenaged harvesting methods, has the added benefit of maintaining ongoing forest cover, habitat complexity, and longterm resilience all crucial factors in sustainable forest ecology.
